Russia spends about $1 billion a year to conduct cyber influence operations in 23 languages. Artificial intelligence (AI) will give Russia, China and Iran even more leverage to distort public opinion and influence elections. If AI abuse is rampant in political campaigns, people may lose all faith in democracy. Therefore we need a broad-based public education campaign to help people see the potential telltales or hallmarks of the manipulative use of disinformation. In addition, it is necessary to create a new kind of capacity in law enforcement to quickly identify and remove disinformation. AI can help detect bad actors.
